The long awaited Bellator debut of one of the top Welterweight contenders in the world, Lorenz "The Monsoon" Larkin is upon us. Larkin's Bellator career will commence on one of the biggest stages of mixed martial arts (MMA) history, at Bellator NYC in Madison Square Garden on June 24, 2017. He will challenge Welterweight knockout (KO) artist and champion, Douglas Lima.

The Arrival
Ever since he made his Welterweight debut in 2015, the California native has been trending upward, winning four of his last five fights. He's recently defeated some of the biggest names in MMA at Welterweight, such as Jorge Masvidal and Neil Magny. His performance against Magny was one of the most impressive showings that the MMA world has seen from him. Larkin plans to build on that performance going forward as he gameplans for Lima, "I'm going to go in there and do what I always do, every fight I go in there and fight my tail off, and that's what I've always done. I think this is why I have become a fan favorite because you know what to expect from me, there's no dull moments." One can conclude that performance against Magny played a huge role in why he was granted the immediate title shot upon signing with Bellator. Larkin was very surprised by the opportunity, "I didn't even think about that (title fight) at all, I just thought I was going to get a normal fight and then the title shot got put in my lap. I can't complain with that."

Larkin is taking this opportunity very seriously and vows not to underestimate Lima, "He's the champ for a reason, Bellator's Welterweight division is not easy and he's stayed on top. He's up there for a reason, I know he's tough and I know the challenges I have to face come June 24th." Lima has finished five of his seven fights under the Bellator banner, by way of KO or technical knockout (TKO), he's accustomed to creating big explosions. However, "The Monsoon" is very comfortable with fighting against his style, "We will see where the fight goes. I have fought guys like him before, I've fought pretty much everybody, it's not much I haven't seen before. I'm going to take my time, pick my shots and fight a smart fight."

Bellator NYC will be the biggest event the promotion has put together in its history, headlined by mega stars Fedor Emelianenko, Matt Mitrione, Chael Sonnen, and Wanderlei Silva. Larkin is honored to share the stage with the legends of the sport, "It shows me the pedestal Bellator holds me to. It shows where they feel I'm at with the company and that they have confidence that I can perform at one of their biggest events ever. It's refreshing to me and I'm pumped that they believe in me like that." Larkin also elaborated on the great relationship he has with Bellator President Scott Coker, and the onboarding process to Bellator "It was an easy transition, it felt welcoming, we handled our business. It felt like I was talking to down-to-earth people, everything was easy and not stressful at all. Next thing you know I was on a flight to New York to promote the fight, everything is good."

Larkin has been adamant on taking the belt and dominating the division moving forward, "I expect to be getting quite a few 'congratulations champ' text messages and they might give me a voucher at the new grocery store I go to now so who knows."  Larkin will have his hands full with Lima and one can expect fireworks when the two collide. Rory MacDonald will be front row tuning into this fight as he has earned the next title shot after outclassing Paul Daley last month. He had an interesting message for the winner of Larkin and Lima, "I guarantee I will take that belt from you and I will take your health." This makes the contest between the Larkin and Lima even sweeter because an epic battle with MacDonald is on the horizon.
